Plugs
Preferred has developed a well-respected reputation for the design and manufacture of all types of plugs. The demands for today's shorter outages sometimes require a different approach to a problem.
The incentive for use of a plug varies with the circumstances and we can assist in evaluating your specific conditions.

Main Steam Line Plugs
Effective solutions to nuclear plant problems demand creative design tempered by the realities of the nuclear workplace. The unique application for Preferred Engineering's products require they perform as expected the first time. Often starting during product development, our testing programs are intended to validate design concepts and material selection as well as demonstrate the performance of the finished product.
Preferred has developed three generations of MSL Plugs. We were the first to design and supply MSL Plugs capable of withstanding full LLRT pressures that allowed full testing in-the-direction-of-flow. Preferred also holds a patent on the design of a hydraulic MSL Plug for larger BWR plants. In 1994, Preferred developed a third generation MSL Plug for "Wet-Lift" installations. The Plugs are installed in pairs and can be installed using a rigid pole system or lift slings.
We have extensive "Large Plug" experience and have engineered and manufactured over 60 plugs 16 inches in diameter or larger.
Key Benefits
- Remotely installable from refueling bridge
- Dual Plug I/R Tool and two MSL plugs weigh approximately 1000 pounds
- Unique design permits testing of MSIV in the direction of steam flow
- Hydraulically actuated/mechanically locked holding and sealing mechanism
- Isolation of each MSIV during LLRT provides dependability
- Redundant, yet diverse means of sealing
- Readily installable — each plug takes 45 minutes or less
- Mechanical training mockups are available for realistic training in a non-radiation environment
PWR Hot/Cold Leg Loop Plugs
Effective solutions to nuclear plant problems demand creative design tempered by the realities of the nuclear workplace. The unique application for Preferred Engineering's products require they perform as expected the first time. Often starting during product development, our testing programs are intended to validate design concepts and material selection as well as demonstrate the performance of the finished product.
Preferred has developed several types of H/C Loop Plugs. The Plugs are normally used during the performance of nozzle inspections. The installation of the Loop Plugs allows the scheduled steam generator work to proceed during the completion of the balance of the nozzle ISI work. The result is a 5-7 day reduction in critical path time.
The Plugs are installed in pairs and can be installed in approximately 2 hours. The Plugs are hydraulically actuated and mechanically locked in place.
We have extensive "Large Plug" experience and have engineered and manufactured over 60 plugs 16 inches in diameter or larger.
Key Benefits
- Remotely installable from refueling bridge
- Dual Plug I/R Tool installs a Hot Leg and a Cold Leg Plug in one lift
- The Tool and two Plugs weigh less than 1000 pounds
- Unique design permits sealing without the use of air or hydraulic lines
- Hydraulically actuated/mechanically locked holding and sealing mechanism
- Isolation of each leg of the Loop allows generator work to begin before the completion of all of the inspections
- Redundant, yet diverse means of sealing
- Mechanical training mockups are available for realistic training in a non-radiation environment
